  • Notice of Resumption of Lending Activities in Malawi

The Malawi Microfinance Network (MAMN) is pleased to inform all civil servants that our member Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) involved in payroll lending with the government ministries and departments have now resumed all lending activities.

This decision has been arrived at following the substantial sum of money received by the microfinance institutions from the government

ministries and departments. As a network of microfinance institutions in Malawi fully mandated to speak on behalf of the members, we applaud the government for heeding our plea by releasing part of the total amounts owed by way of deductions made from the civil servants’ salaries.

However, we also wish to remind government to make good of the outstanding amounts most of which date back to the years 2013, 2014 and part of 2015.

MAMN finds it very disheartening that during the lending suspension period, innocent civil servants who have had money deducted from their salaries in fulfilling their repayment obligations were made to suffer simply because government had not done what is expected of it.

Similarly microfinance institutions are being put in difficult financial circumstances simply because government has not passed on all of the money that was already deducted from civil servants for some unknown reasons. MAMN, once again, calls upon government to come up with a lasting solution to this problem of non-remittance of deductions, a conversation that MAMN has repeatedly called for and is very much committed to engage in.

Please visit your local microfinance service provider as it is now business as usual.
